UA Initiative’s on the ground volunteer team in Poland was recently contacted by a school librarian in Puławy who was seeking urgent help for a student named Zofia. At sixteen, Zofia left Ukraine alone at the start of the war and has been trying to build a life in Poland without stable family support. She has been managing anxiety, depression, panic attacks and insomnia while maintaining a 4.5 GPA and planning for university.
After meeting with Zofia, Romana and the school counselor agreed she needs immediate mental health support and ongoing stability to remain in school.
There is an emergency psychiatric evaluation scheduled this week, costing about 150 USD. To ensure Zofia can stay housed, fed and supported through the remainder of the school year, she will need about 270 USD per month for food, housing and medical follow up.
Who Are We to Help?
This kind of support supports directly within the U4U Network with and Ukraine America Initiative’s mission. Their work is rooted in providing practical help to Ukrainians displaced by war. For over 20 years their team has facilitated economic stability and community support in Ukraine. Since 2022 we have expanded this work into Poland and other host countries, supporting language schools, daycare programs, housing projects and mental and physical wellness services for women and children displaced by the conflict.
Zofia is a resilient student with clear academic goals. A small amount of consistent support will allow her to finish her school year safely and keep her future within reach. If you are able to help, we will ensure every contribution goes directly toward her care and school stability.
Your support does more than help one student, it reinforces a community of care that reaches across Ukraine and Poland through the U4U network.
